Since 2016, Behringer has been delighting musicians with high-value, modernized versions of highly desirable but difficult-to-acquire vintage analog-era synths. Considering the vast array of rejuvenated classic synths Behringer has added to its lineup, the Kobol Expander is among the rarest and most difficult to obtain until now. Less than 200 examples of the 1979 French-made RSR Kobal were ever produced, and fewer still made their way to the USA. Yet its unique sonics earned worldwide fame through the music of synth luminaries such as Vince Clark, Hans Zimmer, Peter Gabriel, and more. Although based on (and sometimes referred to as) the “French Minimoog,” the Kobol is loved for its versatile VCO and LFO waveform interaction--and its raw-through-sweet range of harmonic distortion that’s completely unique.
The Behringer Kobal expander is an all-analog patchable module that can be used as a companion/expander--or as a very capable and versatile standalone duophonic synth. Its all-analog signal path includes two independent VCOs, 7 sweepable waveforms, Oscillator sync, and PWM for near-endless sonic sculpting. The legendary “Kobol” raw and ripping bass and screaming lead sounds come courtesy from the uniquely designed gritty, 4-pole CVF. The LFO can deliver 2-selectable waveforms with multiple destination possibilities (including external modules or synths), and the amazingly quick ADS envelopes multiply and sharply define the versatile power at your fingertips. Additionally, Behringer’s included an extra noise generator, further augmenting the already flexible waveform timbre.
Like the original, the Kobol features 32 patch points for old-school semi-modular deep architecture manipulation, an external audio input, and modern MIDI In/Thru and USB connectivity—plus Behringer’s 16-voice Poly Chain for up to 16 note polyphony, all in one Eurorack compatible, ultra-affordable module.
