If you're familiar at all with the Shure SM7B microphone, you are aware of 3 facts. Fact #1 - the 7B is a great vocal mic. Fact #2 - the 7B has a painfully low output. Fact #3 - Fact #2 makes it very hard to take advantage of Fact #1. The Crimson 7UP solves this problem. A special transformer design combined with wide band, low noise electronics provide over 20dB of actual, real world gain. That's enough to make your 7B a willing participant in even the most challenging applications.
Because of it's internal construction, any ribbon microphone has much less ability to supply "power" to it's "signal" than a SM7B. Technically, we would say the ribbon mic has a higher outtput impedance than the 7B, and this requires a higher input impedance from the device it's feeding - the preamp. The 7B on the other hand, can not only lower impedance, sonically it thrives on it. The 7UP's unique transformer and associated circuitry produce an impedance which is about 85% kess than ribbon mic "boosters", landing it right in the middle of 7B's sweet spot. The improvement is almost startling. Once you've tried a 7UP, you won't use your 7B with anything else.
